Cities Readiness Initiative/ Strategic National Stockpile

The Cities Readiness Initiative (CRI) is a federally funded effort to prepare major US cities and metropolitan areas, including Riverside County, to effectively respond to a large scale bioterrorist event by requesting, receiving, distributing and dispensing antibiotics and other life-saving medical supplies to their entire identified population within 48 hours of the decision to do so.  Funding for CRI is provided through the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention’s Public Health Emergency Preparedness (PHEP) Cooperative Agreement.

CRI builds on a preexisting program that provides for the availability, distribution, and dispensing of medical countermeasures from the Strategic National Stockpile.  The SNS maintains caches of medications and other medical countermeasures in undisclosed locations across the country.  SNS materiel can be requested by states and localities (working through their states) in the event that they are overwhelmed—or are threatened with being overwhelmed—by a large-scale public health emergency.
